Our Ministry
Our goal is to go to one specific tribal group in Papua New Guinea, learn their unique and complex language and culture, and communicate the truth of God’s Word to them in a clear, relevant way. Over time we hope to see many churches established that have their own leadership, their own translation of the New Testament, and are not dependent on us as the outsiders in any way. Each of these churches is then able to go out into surrounding villages and tribes, reaching others with the truth with which they themselves have been reached.
So why are we willing to go and live in the middle of nowhere for years, far removed from our families, even from civilization? Because we’re convinced that God desires every people group on earth to have the opportunity to know Him. He has provided one way for that to happen: by believing that His Son, Jesus Christ, died on the cross to pay the penalty of our sins. Nothing apart from that makes us acceptable to God. We know that without someone like us going to these remote people groups, the message of Christ’s death will never be heard. People ask us, “Why you? Why do you have to be the one to go?” Our reply is, “Why not us? The message of Christ simply isn’t getting out, and if we who have the message are not willing, the job won’t get done.”
Making It Happen
So how does all of that happen? It takes many years to get from the point of not understanding one word of their language to the point of feeling able to leave and allow the tribal believers to function entirely on their own. Where do you start?
Survey: We begin by studying specific tribal groups and prayerfully consider in which location to begin our ministry.
Move In: We move into the tribal location and get established. This means building a house and bringing in personal equipment by plane, boat or trail.
Language and Culture Study: We commit long hours and eventually years to understanding the language and culture of the people.
Literacy: We teach the people how to read. In order for the church to be truly established, the people must be able to read God’s Word for themselves, and many tribal languages have yet to be broken down into written form.
Chronological Bible Teaching: Teaching the Bible from beginning to end allows the truth of the Bible to be established in the hearts of the people step by step, the way God presented His Word to the world.
Bible Translation: The process of Bible translation takes many years, but eventually the entire New Testament and many passages of the Old Testament will be completed and given to the people.
Outreach: Once we have believers in one village, we will begin training them how to go out into surrounding villages and eventually surrounding tribes and teach the Bible the way we taught it to them.
Passing the Baton: As people place their faith in Christ, we immediately begin looking for capable tribal men who will function as church leaders. From the beginning we are teaching them to look to the Lord for guidance rather than coming to us instead. Eventually, when we feel the timing is right, we will leave the tribe completely in order to allow them to function on their own.
